About Living Word Lutheran Church

History

In February of 1940, a small group of believers met for the first time in Montrose, CO as St. John’s Lutheran Church. Since that first worship service the congregation has been served by a number of faithful pastors of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). In 2002 the little white church building on Park Ave. was sold and services were moved to a storefront on Uncompahgre Ave. The name of the congregation was also changed at that time to Living Word Lutheran Church. Currently plans are in the process to build a new worship facility on a piece of property on the east side of town.

Beliefs

The congregation accepts and confesses all the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God. We do not add, we do not subtract, and we do not change any of God’s clear words as found in the Bible. We also agree in full with the confessions contained in the Book of Concord (1580) as a correct exposition of Christian doctrine, drawn from, and in full agreement with, the Holy Scriptures. For a complete description of what we believe and teach on any given subject, please visit our synod’s website www.wels.net.

Mission

The mission of this group of believers is to preach and teach the Word of God to those within this congregation and to spread the Word of God to those outside this congregation in keeping with 2 Timothy 4:2.

Pastor

Since July of 2006, Living Word has been served by Pastor Matthew Frey. After spending most of his childhood in Seward, NE, he attended the synod’s worker training college: Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN. After completing his four-year degree, he was trained for three years at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Milwaukee, WI, and spent his vicar year in Eagle River, WI.  Pastor Frey was assigned to Living Word Lutheran Church after graduation and now lives here with his family. He has been married since June of 2004 to Jessica (nee Winkel), and they have been blessed with three children: Emma, Elijah, and Seth.
